Description
Collect
Draw one green top tube (Sodium or Lithium Heparin), or one lavender top tube (EDTA).
Specimen Preparation
Do not centrifuge! Keep at room temp (18-22°C).
Preferred volume: 4 mL
Pediatric Collection
Minimum volume: 1 mL blood
Unacceptable Conditions
Frozen, clotted, hemolyzed or centrifuged specimens. Anticoagulants other than heparin or EDTA. Specimens >24 hrs old.
Storage Transport Temp
Maintain and transport specimens at room temperature (18-22°C).
Ship specimens Priority Overnight via Fed Ex in container sufficiently insulated to avoid temperature extremes (<10°C and >37°C).
Stability
24 hours at room temperature (18-22°C)
Notes
Samples must arrive within 24 hours of draw and are accepted Monday through noon on Friday.
Reference Interval
CD46 is expressed on WBCs of normal individuals.
Interpretation
Mutations of genes encoding Factors H and I and the membrane cofactor (MCP or CD46) are associated with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome AHUS). Decreased expression of CD46 may be associated with atypical HUS.
