Severe asthma is a chronic condition that affects 12 million Americans and is the leading cause of emergency room visits, missed days of school and hospitalizations in children. In California, asthma affects 2.3 million adults and more than 644,000 children. National Jewish Health established the Cohen Family Asthma Institute with the goal to cure severe asthma within five years. The Institute builds on historic strengths at National Jewish Health in asthma, allergy and immunology, and brings together a broad coalition of researchers, physicians, patients and health care organizations to focus on the causes, treatments and prevention of severe asthma. With the initial donation from Michele and Martin Cohen of New York and support from donors across the country, National Jewish Health will achieve this ambitious goal for people with severe asthma worldwide.
