Possible triggers of Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO) and are often similar to asthma triggers. However, it is important to know that not all people who experience EILO have asthma.

The following are some common triggers for EILO:

  • Strong odors/fragrances
  • Smoke
  • Heightened emotions (stress and anxiety)
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Some vocal maneuvers (talking, singing, laughing)
  • Changes in temperature and humidity
  • Exercise.

People with EILO generally have symptoms that are limited to exercise, although occasionally other triggers can cause problems.

Sometimes the triggers are not identified.
