In some children, the muscle between the esophagus and stomach may not work well. This can allow some back flow of stomach acid into the esophagus, airway, throat or mouth. This may cause heartburn.

This stomach acid may also cause a reflex response that can result in asthma symptoms. Asthma symptoms or a cough or heartburn, especially at night, can indicate gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).

Actions You Can Take against Gastroesophageal Reflux

  • Elevate the head of the bed 6 – 8 inches, by placing blocks under the legs of the bed.

  • Avoid food or liquids 2 – 3 hours before bedtime.

  • Medications may be prescribed to help prevent gastroesophageal reflux.
